Gonçalo M. Tavares

Gonçalo M. Tavares is one of Portugal’s leading contemporary writers.

Hailed by critics as the “greatest revelation in Portuguese literature in recent years”, he has won several important literary awards, including the Gulbenkian & Expresso Prize for Best New Author, the Association of Portuguese Authors Prize for Poetry, the BCP Readers Circle Award and the Portugal Telecom 2007 prize for his novel Jerusalem.

In 2005, he won Portugal’s prestigious literary award – the José Saramago Prize for the best fictional work, awarded by the Fundação Círculo de Leitores.

Covering the entire literary spectrum of poetry, theatre, novels and short stories, his works have been translated into several languages, including Italian, Dutch, Spanish, French and Hungarian. The Neighbourhood series published by transbooks is the first English translation of an important collection of short stories inspired by leading literary figures.
